Out of the harsh and blinding blizzards of the East, tread three heroes, their tired and bedraggled bodies evidences of their trials and tribulations, silhouetted against the low winter sun. Against all odds, this unlikely band of heroes did what no other group of adventurers had done before: slay the evil witch. Eight had set out on this mythic quest. Three returned. This is their tale…

Melehan and Morvith, vile brothers of vile seed, born of the wicked sorceress queen Morgana and her consort, they are as feared as they are famed. One has the gift of murderous cunning, the other gift of being cunningly murderous. Before they were kings they were kin, sent down two separate roads by their mother, one quest for death making, the other for soul taking…

This is such a tale, of black roses and their thorns…

Parisa’s sore feet walked along crumbled stone. Every day she woke it was if the previous day of torment had been forgotten, making each pain as fresh and strange as the first. She limped with her chained procession and looked around. Nothing but a sea of humanity before and behind her.

Something foul was afoot in Fair Wood and she would get to the bottom of it. A Fair Wood without fresh spring water, chattering birds and giggling fairies was no Fair Wood at all. It was an oasis of joy and wholesome pleasures, a place where those with cares became carefree.

A great banner fluttered in the smoky battlefield, a black crescent moon with a rich violet backdrop marking its heraldry. Accompanying the sound of billowing cloth, was also the crackle of fire and the cries of the dying. War had come to Camelot.

On the highest mountain peak there stood the tallest tower, wickedly jagged and blackened with flame, built on a foundation of dead kings and noble princes, holding the last pure maiden in all the land. Only one daring knight had the courage and cunning to win this fair lady’s heart and bring her home a merry, blushing bride…

*

Celeste held her lady-in-waiting’s hand tightly as another hero burst forth into the tower chamber, eager to rescue her. The stony steps leading up to her welcoming bed were littered with the dead, some mangled, others charred, all potential lovers and rescuers, gone forever.

This was originally the epilogue from Witching Day, but since I loved how succinctly that story ended, I decided to cut it out, but by the time I had done that, I had already written a fair amount of content so I reworked it for its own submission. This very short story requires no prior knowledge of any other stories in this universe.

Ingrid clutched her cloak close, seeking warmth in the shadowed wood of Castle Revinor. Continue reading The First Disciple
